The Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302), from Hubble
The Butterfly Nebula, NGC 6302, photographed by Hubble right after its 2009 servicing mission: gas thrown off by a dying star spreads like a butterfly's wings. More than half the image is pure black — OLED-friendly and clock-friendly at once.

About this wallpaper
The Butterfly Nebula image released by ESA/Hubble in 2009 (heic0910h), cropped to 9:16 around one wing. NGC 6302, a planetary nebula in the direction of Scorpius: purple, pink and orange gas spreads like a wing through the center of the frame, surrounded by pure black space. More than half of the pixels are black, making it one of the darkest space images on the site. Licensed CC BY 4.0; credit NASA, ESA and the Hubble SM4 ERO Team.
On the home screen
The top and bottom are pure black, so icons there keep labels readable and leave the gas in the center visible.
On the lock screen
The top is black space, so a white clock reads clearly.
Colors and mood
Black, with purple, pink and orange gas in the center.
