Aurora Australis from Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-47)
The aurora australis on 35mm film, shot by the crew of Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS-47 in September 1992. Green curtains fill the frame and a faint red tint bleeds in at the very top. NASA's caption calls it one of the more spectacular views the crew captured.

About this wallpaper
A Space Shuttle photograph from NASA's image library (STS047-20-015, taken during the Spacelab-J mission of 12–20 September 1992), cropped to 9:16 around the auroral curtains. Layer upon layer of green curtains fill the middle and lower frame, stars dot the black space above, and a faint red glow bleeds into the very top. It was shot on 35mm film, so the grain is coarse; that texture is part of its character. A public-domain NASA photograph.
On the home screen
The green curtains spread from the middle down and the space above is nearly black, so icons at the top leave the aurora uncovered.
On the lock screen
The top is black space with few stars, so a white clock reads clearly.
Colors and mood
Bright green aurora, black space and a faint red at the very top.
